Kathmandu get closer to playoffs with convincing win over Karnali

Kathmandu Gorkhas, who missed out on the playoffs in the first edition of the Nepal Premier League (NPL) due to net run rate, have turned the script around in the second season.

This year, not only have they strengthened their net run rate, but they have also moved significantly closer to securing a playoff berth with a convincing run of victories.

After beginning the tournament with a win over defending champions Janakpur Bolts, Kathmandu slipped in the following two matches. But the team has bounced back impressively, registering three consecutive wins, including Sunday’s five-wicket triumph over Karnali Yaks, which marked their fourth victory of the season.

The result has placed them firmly on the brink of the playoffs, with their improved net run rate offering additional security. Foreign players have been central to Kathmandu's resurgence. Their consistent form once again proved decisive against Karnali.

Bowling first after losing the toss, Kathmandu restricted Karnali to 149. In reply, the overseas contingent laid the foundation for a composed chase. Ben Charlesworth provided a brisk start with 34 off 21 balls, while Gerhard Erasmus anchored the innings with an unbeaten 43 from 33. Jon Simpson’s attacking 41 off 21 balls further ensured the chase remained in control. Milind Kumar contributed 15 runs, rounding off a batting effort almost entirely driven by foreign recruits.

Sunday’s match was Erasmus’ final appearance for Kathmandu this season as he now departs for the ILT20 in the UAE. He signed off in style, earning the Player of the Match award. Erasmus expressed mixed feelings about leaving midway, saying he was happy to contribute to a victory but disappointed to be exiting the tournament earlier than he wished.

Kathmandu have not signed a specialist overseas fast bowler this season, instead opting for three foreign batters and three part-time spinning all-rounders. With Erasmus gone, the team may face new challenges.

For Karnali Yaks, the defeat has severely dented their playoff hopes. Despite putting up a competitive total, their bowling and fielding once again let them down. Captain Sompal Kami conceded 35 runs in three overs, while pacer Nandan Yadav took three wickets but proved expensive.

Karnali now need to win both of their remaining matches and hope for favorable outcomes elsewhere.
