Robinson, Jamieson shine as 16 wickets fall on dramatic opening day at Lord's
Under overcast conditions and on a lively pitch, New Zealand's pace attack made the most of the helpful conditions after captain Tom Latham elected to bowl first.
Returning seamer Kyle Jamieson starred with 5-62, ripping through England's batting line-up. England struggled throughout the innings, slipping to 33-4 after early strikes from Jamieson, William O'Rourke and Nathan Smith.
Only Harry Brook offered significant resistance, scoring 56, while no other batter reached 30.
Nathan Smith finished with 3-38 and O'Rourke claimed 2-25 as England were dismissed for 140.
England responded brilliantly with the ball. Returning fast bowler Ollie Robinson produced a devastating spell, taking three wickets in a maiden over and reducing New Zealand to deep trouble.
He dismissed Devon Conway, Kane Williamson and Rachin Ravindra in quick succession before later removing Daryl Mitchell.
New Zealand's collapse continued as Gus Atkinson trapped Latham lbw and Josh Tongue dismissed Tom Blundell, leaving the visitors reeling at 29-6.
However, Glenn Phillips launched a counterattack with an unbeaten 31 and, alongside Nathan Smith, guided New Zealand to 61-6 at stumps.
At the close of play, New Zealand still trailed England by 79 runs in a Test that already promises plenty more twists after a chaotic first day.
