BCCI set to discuss retirement policy for Indian cricketers
The issue has come into focus following Vijay Shankar's recent retirement from Indian cricket. Shortly after announcing his decision, he made himself available for the Lanka Premier League (LPL) and was signed by Kandy Royals for the 2026 season.
Shankar is not the first Indian player to take this route. Former cricketers such as Dinesh Karthik, Yuvraj Singh, Unmukt Chand, Praveen Tambe and Irfan Pathan have also retired before participating in overseas competitions.
The matter is expected to be discussed at an online meeting of the BCCI Apex Council. Under current rules, active Indian players, whether international, domestic or IPL cricketers, are not allowed to play in foreign leagues.
It remains to be seen whether the board will make any changes to the existing policy.
