TU issues exit notice to CAN

Tribhuvan University (TU) has given the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) 35 days to vacate the TU International Cricket Stadium in Kirtipur, signalling a firm move to reclaim land under its ownership.

The notice comes as TU intensifies efforts to recover land being used by outside organisations. A land investigation committee report in 2081 found that around 1,000 ropanis of university land in Kirtipur were occupied or being used by external bodies. CAN, whose existing agreement was due to expire at the end of Baisakh, was among those affected. TU has decided against renewing the arrangement.

University officials have cited disruption to academic life as a key reason. Major cricket events at the stadium often affect normal campus operations for extended periods, with interruptions sometimes continuing even after tournaments conclude.

The development leaves CAN in a difficult position. At its most recent board meeting, CAN resolved to request government support through the National Sports Council to secure an extension of the TU agreement. The board also sought control of the Lower Mulpani ground as an additional facility.

CAN's spokesperson said the association had not yet formally received the university's letter, although TU officials indicated public holidays may have delayed its delivery.

The decision also casts doubt over a previously approved 10 billion rupee redevelopment project for the stadium site. The government had endorsed plans to modernise the venue, with multiple administrations backing the proposal over the years and initial work already progressing. TU's latest move now raises fresh uncertainty over the project's future.

The TU International Cricket Stadium remains Nepal's premier cricket venue and is currently hosting Cricket World Cup League 2 matches. Any prolonged uncertainty over its status would be a significant concern for Nepal cricket as it continues to grow on the international stage.
