Canada-Netherlands ODI abandoned after dangerous pitch concerns

The ICC Men's Cricket World Cup League 2 match between Canada and the Netherlands in King City, Toronto, was abandoned after just 4.1 overs because of concerns over the safety of the pitch.

Having elected to bat, the Netherlands reached 15 for 1 before match officials called off the contest. Max O'Dowd was dismissed for a duck in the second over, but the major concern was the uneven bounce on the surface, with batters repeatedly struck during the brief passage of play.

The abandonment comes only four days after the International Cricket Council (ICC) issued an ‘unsatisfactory' rating to the same venue following the ODI between the USA and the Netherlands on June 8.

Match referee Phil Thompson had described that surface as 'very poor', saying the inconsistent bounce created difficult and potentially unsafe conditions. Both captains had expressed disappointment with the pitch, which subsequently received one demerit point under the ICC's pitch and outfield monitoring process.

According to ICC regulations, an ‘unsatisfactory' rating carries one demerit point, while a pitch deemed unfit results in three demerit points. These points remain active for five years on a rolling basis.

Should a venue accumulate six demerit points within that period, it faces a 12-month suspension from hosting international matches, while 12 demerit points would result in a two-year ban.

The abandoned fixture forms part of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup League 2, a key tournament in the qualification pathway for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

The latest incident is likely to place further scrutiny on the King City venue after back-to-back matches raised serious concerns over pitch quality and player safety.
