South Africa outplay India to end long unbeaten streak in T20 world cup

South Africa delivered a statement performance in the Super 8 stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, thrashing India by 76 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday.

The emphatic victory not only strengthened South Africa’s position in Group 1 but also snapped India’s long-standing unbeaten run in multi-nation T20 tournaments.

India had not lost a match in global T20 events since their semifinal exit in 2022, going on to win the 2024 edition undefeated and remaining unbeaten in this tournament until this clash.

Set a formidable target of 188, India faltered under pressure and were bowled out for 111 in 18.5 overs. Shivam Dube fought a lone battle with 42 runs, while captain Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya managed 18 runs each. The rest of the batting order failed to build partnerships against a relentless South African attack.

Marco Jansen starred with the ball, taking 4 for 22 in just 3.5 overs. Keshav Maharaj supported brilliantly with three wickets, while Corbin Bosch claimed two and skipper Aiden Markram added one to complete a dominant bowling display.

Earlier, South Africa capitalized after winning the toss and choosing to bat first, posting 187 for 7 in their 20 overs. David Miller led the charge with a powerful 63 off 35 balls, smashing seven boundaries and three sixes.

Tristan Stubbs accelerated at the death with an unbeaten 44 off 24 deliveries, and Dewald Brevis contributed a brisk 35 off 29 balls.

For India, Jasprit Bumrah stood out with figures of 3 for 15 in four overs, while Arshdeep Singh picked up two wickets. Varun Chakravarthy and Shivam Dube took one wicket each.

With the win, South Africa earned two crucial points in Super 8 Group 1 and kept their unbeaten campaign intact in this season.

This also marked their avenge of their defeat in the previous T20 World Cup final.
