Nepal earn first point, rain knock Lankans almost out

Nepal earned their first point in the ongoing Twenty20 World Cup after the match against Sri Lanka was abandoned due to rain in Florida.

The match was already in doubt as chunks of puddle at Lauderhill’s Central Broward and Broward County Stadium made difficult for groundsmen to force a game even after the rain had stopped.

Nepal had lost their tournament opener against the Netherlands and will now head to the Caribbean where they play rest of the two Group ‘D’ teams Bangladesh and South Africa.

To have any realistic chance of making it to the Super 8, Nepal need to beat both the Test nations which will be their first ever in cricket history if they do so.

Sri Lanka, meanwhile, are all but out of the tournament having already lost to South Africa and Bangladesh in the first two matches.

The 2014 champions now not only need to defeat Netherlands in their last game but also pray all the result go into their favour which now seems highly unlikely.

The single point, however, was dejection for Nepali fans who had once again turned in numbers from across the US to watch their team play.

Nepali supporters were still thronging the ground just moments before the match was abandoned.

The cricket world was taken over when a wave of blue and red engulfed the Grand Prairie Stadium in Texas on June 4 when Nepal played their first game.

A similar story would have unfolded had rain hadn’t played spoilsport on Tuesday. Nepal will play South Africa in Kingstown on June 14 before taking on Bangladesh on June 16 at the same venue.
