Nepal bow out of T20 World Cup after nine-wicket loss to West Indies
Nepal are officially out of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 after suffering a nine-wicket defeat to West Indies on Sunday at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
On a damp morning surface that was not easy for batting, Nepal were asked to bat first and could only manage 133 for 8 in their 20 overs. The batting struggles continued as they slipped to 73 for 6 at one stage, once again putting themselves under pressure.
It was Dipendra Singh Airee who stood tall for Nepal. He scored 58 off 47 balls with three sixes and three fours. Along with Sompal Kami, he added 54 runs for the seventh wicket to take Nepal to a respectable total after a top-order collapse.
With this knock, Airee became only the second Nepal batter after Subas Khakurel to score a fifty in a T20 World Cup. Khakurel had achieved the feat against Afghanistan in Nepal’s historic nine-run win.
Kami, who replaced Lalit Rajbanshi in the XI, remained unbeaten on 26. He struck four boundaries, including three consecutive fours off Jason Holder.
Holder was the pick of the bowlers with 4 for 27, while Akeal Hosein, Matthew Forde, Shamar Joseph and Roston Chase picked up one wicket each.
In reply, Nepal managed just one breakthrough. Nandan Yadav dismissed Brandon King for 22. West Indies captain Shai Hope scored 61 while Shimron Hetmyer made 46 as the pair added 91 runs to guide West Indies to victory and into the Super Eight.
With three defeats from three matches, Nepal are officially knocked out of the tournament. They will play their final group game against Scotland on Tuesday, but their hopes of progressing further are over.
