Lalit Rajbanshi has now become a key member in the national side. Ever since his return from injury that coincided with the arrival of coach Monty Desai, Lalit has become a different bowler than he was when he began his national team career.

A bowler who would often be used in the middle overs to stem the run flow, Lalit is now primed for the beginning of the innings where he would try to exploit batsmen’s nature to take advantage of the powerplays where only the 30-yard circle is crowded.

Lalit’s shift in bowling position has fetched results at times. He has managed to get rid of aggressive openers who tend to go after the bowlers in the powerplays.

Not a professional cricketer at all
The left arm spinner, however, has a story with unexpected turns.

Believe it or not, Lalit began his cricketing career as an umpire. Yes, he was a certified umpire.

But his passion for bowling couldn’t be contained. A senior umpire in Nepal recognised Lalit’s potential and suggested him to play the game rather than officiating in it.

Lalit made his Twenty20 20 International debut alongside Dipendra Singh Airee at the iconic Lords, although the match got washed out. He spent some time away from the national team, but his return has been a game-changer.

Lalit’s comeback has coincided with a period of strong performances for Nepal in which the country saw winning 11 out of their last 12 games in the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 and qualify for the 2023 World Cup Qualifier.

He has been a key contributor with the ball in their victories. His ability to bowl with the new ball and use the older one effectively is a valuable asset, especially considering the upcoming Caribbean pitches.

His journey from umpire to impactful bowler is an inspiration, and his performance in the T20 World Cup will be one to watch.
