Jansen, Markram star in South Africa's third consecutive win

South Africa strengthened their chances of reaching the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2026 after securing a convincing seven-wicket victory over New Zealand in a Group D clash at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on Saturday. 

Chasing a competitive target of 176, South Africa reached 178/3 in just 17.1 overs. Captain Aiden Markram led from the front with an unbeaten 86 off 44 balls, striking eight fours and four sixes. 

David Miller remained not out on 24, while Ryan Rickelton and Dewald Brevis scored 21 each, and Quinton de Kock added 20. 

For New Zealand, Lockie Ferguson, Jimmy Neesham and Rachin Ravindra picked up one wicket apiece. 

Earlier, after being asked to bat first, New Zealand posted 175/7 in their 20 overs. Mark Chapman top-scored with 48, while Daryl Mitchell made 32, Finn Allen contributed 31 and Neesham remained unbeaten on 23. 

South Africa’s bowling was led by Marco Jansen, who claimed four wickets, while Lungi Ngidi, Keshav Maharaj and Corbin Bosch took one each. 

With three wins in a row, South Africa now sit on six points at the top of the group standings. 

New Zealand remain second with four points from three matches, while United Arab Emirates are third with two points. 

Canada national cricket team and Afghanistan national cricket team are yet to register a point in the tournament.
