Italy’s historic debut at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup ended in disappointment as Scotland secured a convincing 73-run victory in a Group C match at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on Monday.

Italy, who had earlier stunned Scotland in the European Qualifier final to reach their first T20 World Cup, could not repeat that performance this time.

Scotland, who had lost their opening game to West Indies, bounced back strongly to keep their Super Eight hopes alive.

They had entered the tournament based on ranking after Bangladesh withdrew citing security concerns.

Batting first, Scotland posted an imposing 207/4. George Munsey led the charge with 84 runs, Brandon McMullen remained unbeaten on 41, and Michael Jones added 37.

Michael Leask provided a late flourish with a quick unbeaten 22. In reply, Italy were bowled out for 134 in 16.4 overs. Ben Manenti scored 52 to become Italy’s first T20 World Cup half-centurion, while Harry Manenti made 37.

Italy were also hit by an early setback when captain Wayne Madsen suffered a shoulder injury while fielding. Leask starred with the ball as well, taking four wickets, while Mark Watt picked up two.

In Group C, England, West Indies and Scotland all have two points each, while Nepal and Italy remain winless after their opening matches.

West Indies will face England on February 11, followed by Nepal vs Italy on February 12.

Elsewhere, South Africa and Zimbabwe also began their campaigns with wins. In Group D, South Africa defeated Canada by 57 runs after posting 213/4, with captain Aiden Markram scoring 59. Canada managed only 156 in reply.

In Group B, Zimbabwe comfortably beat Oman. Oman were bowled out for 103, and Zimbabwe chased the target in 13.3 overs, with opener Brian Bennett scoring an unbeaten 48.
