Hetmyer, Alzarri return to West Indies squad for Sri Lanka ODIs
Fast bowler Alzarri Joseph also returns after recovering from a back injury. Hetmyer last played an ODI against England in June last year and has since missed series against Pakistan, Bangladesh, and New Zealand.
He will rejoin the squad ahead of the final ODI of the Sri Lanka series, which begins on June 3 at Sabina Park. The left-handed batter impressed during the recent ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, scoring 248 runs at an average of 41.33 and a strike rate of 186.46.
However, his recent IPL 2026 campaign with Rajasthan Royals was less successful, where he managed 78 runs in seven innings.
Cricket West Indies said Hetmyer’s return is part of their long-term planning for the 50-over World Cup next year, following his strong T20 World Cup performances.
Alzarri Joseph is also set to make his international comeback after a long injury layoff, while Shamar Joseph and Jayden Seales are included with workload management in mind.
Left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie also returns to the squad. Several players, including Alick Athanaze, Johann Layne, Khary Pierre, and Romario Shepherd, have been left out from the squad that toured New Zealand.
West Indies have struggled in recent ODI form, losing five of their last six matches, although they have performed well at home, winning their last four bilateral series since 2023.
They currently sit 10th in the ODI rankings and are competing for automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup.
Head coach Daren Sammy emphasized the importance of discipline, intensity, and consistency as the team looks to build a stronger identity ahead of the upcoming matches.
The ODI series against Sri Lanka will be followed by three T20Is in Jamaica and two Test matches in Antigua.
West Indies ODI squad vs Sri Lanka : Shai Hope (capt, wk), Ackeem Auguste, John Campbell, Keacy Carty, Roston Chase, Matthew Forde, Justin Greaves, Shimron Hetmyer, Amir Jangoo, Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph, Gudakesh Motie, Sherfane Rutherford, Jayden Seales, Shamar Springer
