Campbelle's unbeaten 90 powers West Indies to thrilling win over New Zealand
An outstanding unbeaten 90 from Shemaine Campbelle guided West Indies to a dramatic seven-wicket victory over defending champions New Zealand in a high-scoring encounter.
Chasing 163, West Indies reached 163-3 with one ball to spare, with Campbelle producing the best innings of her T20I career. The wicketkeeper-batter struck seven fours and three sixes in her 62-ball knock, registering her maiden T20I half-century and carrying her side home in a tense finish.
Captain Hayley Matthews provided excellent support with 48 from 37 balls as the pair added 74 runs for the second wicket. Matthews survived several chances before eventually falling short of a half-century, while Campbelle continued to punish New Zealand's error-strewn fielding display.
The defending champions dropped as many as seven catches, with Campbelle and Matthews both benefiting from multiple reprieves.
Earlier, New Zealand made 162-6 after a strong start from Izzy Gaze, who scored 39, and a late flourish from Brooke Halliday, who struck 40. Maddy Green remained unbeaten on 35, helping the defending champions recover from a middle-order collapse.
The turnaround was sparked by medium-pacer Aaliyah Alleyne, who removed Georgia Plimmer, captain Melie Kerr and Gaze in quick succession. Alleyne finished with impressive figures of 4-27.
Despite a spirited final over from veteran Sophie Devine, Campbelle squeezed through for the winning run to complete another memorable victory for West Indies over New Zealand.
Brief Scores:
New Zealand 162-6 (Brooke Halliday 40, Izzy Gaze 39, Maddy Green 35*; Aaliyah Alleyne 4-27)
West Indies 163-3 (Shemaine Campbelle 90*, Hayley Matthews 48)
West Indies won by seven wickets.
