Australia add Steve Smith to T20 world cup squad ahead of Sri Lanka clash

Australia have officially added Steve Smith to their 15-man T20 World Cup squad just hours before their crucial match against Sri Lanka.

Smith replaces injured fast bowler Josh Hazlewood, who was ruled out of the tournament earlier this month due to an Achilles injury.

A replacement had not been named at the time, but Smith has now been approved by the ICC Event Technical Committee and is available for selection.

The right-hander recently arrived in Sri Lanka and trained with the squad in Kandy on Sunday. He had initially joined the team as cover for captain Mitch Marsh, who missed Australia’s first two matches with a testicular injury.

Marsh returned to training on Sunday and looked comfortable during running, fielding, and a 45-minute batting session. A final decision on his availability for Tuesday’s must-win game at Pallekele Stadium will be made closer to match time.

Selector Tony Dodemaide said the move was made in line with ICC regulations, which require squad changes to be activated before a match.

“With Steve here, and some uncertainty around Mitch and Marcus Stoinis, it made sense to activate him so he is available if required,” Dodemaide said.

Allrounder Marcus Stoinis has been declared fit despite suffering a blow to his left hand in the previous match. He trained for over an hour but needed strapping during the session.

Stoinis was Australia’s best bowler in their 23-run loss to Zimbabwe, taking an early wicket before leaving the field after being struck on the hand.

If Marsh returns, or if Smith is included in the playing XI, wicketkeeper Josh Inglis is likely to move back to his usual No.3 position after opening in the first two matches.

Matthew Renshaw is expected to retain his place after strong performances, including a 65 against Zimbabwe and 37 in the opening win over Ireland. Even if Smith does not play against Sri Lanka, his inclusion signals he remains part of Australia’s T20 plans, with an eye on the 2028 Olympics.

He comes into the tournament in good form after scoring 299 runs at a strike rate close to 170 in six Big Bash League matches for the Sydney Sixers.

Australia currently sit third in Group B following their defeat to Zimbabwe. They likely need to win both remaining matches to secure a place in the Super Eight stage.

Their final group match against Oman could also be crucial in determining net run rate if teams finish level on points.
