Former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff has been appointed as the new head coach of Sydney Thunder ahead of the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) seasons.

The appointment was officially announced on June 2, with Flintoff taking over from Trevor Bayliss, who stepped down after six years in charge.

Flintoff has signed a two-year contract with the Sydney-based franchise, reportedly beating fellow candidates Shane Watson and Dan Christian for the position.

This marks Flintoff’s first coaching role outside England. He previously guided Northern Superchargers in The Hundred competition, helping the team improve from the bottom of the table to back-to-back top-four finishes.

He has also worked with the England Lions and served as a consultant for England’s white-ball teams under coach Matt Mott.

Expressing his excitement, Flintoff said he sees great potential in the Thunder squad and believes the club has a strong foundation to build upon.

He highlighted the blend of experienced players such as David Warner, Chris Green, and Daniel Sams, along with emerging talents including Sam Konstas, Matthew Gilkes, and Tanveer Sangha.

Thunder’s decision comes after disappointing BBL campaigns, with the team finishing last in each of the previous two seasons.

The club described Flintoff’s arrival as one of the most significant off-field signings in its history, while General Manager Trent Copeland called the appointment a landmark moment for the franchise.

Flintoff also has previous BBL experience as a player, having represented Brisbane Heat in seven matches during the 2014–15 season near the end of his playing career.
